*Fundraising Update: Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated!! We’re still working on updating this webpage with gifts that came via check, but we’ve now raised over $10,000 !

Hi! I’m Helen. I’m running the Boston Marathon for the first time this year, in support of BOTSOGO, a program working to improve access to quality cancer care in Botswana.

BOTSOGO works to achieve this goal by:

  • educating the Botswana population
  • training future generations of cancer caregivers and
  • conducting vital clinical research

Specifically:
  1. BOTSOGO helped doctors in Botswana established curative radiation therapy for cervical cancer, the most common cancer.  This has been done in collaboration with the Gaborone private Hospital, and the Chief of Radiation Therapy, Memory Nsingo.
  2. BOTSOGO has sponsored numerous training visits to MGH for pathologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, and palliative care doctors.
  3. BOTSOGO has collaborated with the Ministry of Health in securing new research grants from the US National Institutes of Health and from foundations interested in cancer care in Africa.
  4. BOTSOGO is sponsoring the further cancer subspecialty training of a young physician from the Princess Marina Hospital.  Since there is no current program in Botswana, they are supporting his training in Capetown, South Africa.

If you'd like to read more about the great work BOTSOGO is doing, here is the link to their webpage: http://www.botsogo.org

I've had the chance to meet BOTSOGO's MGH team several times and I'm very impressed - they are an incredibly hardworking and inspiring group! Thank you for considering a gift to support their program. One donor has agreed to “match” the first $5000 raised, so if you donate early, your gift will count for double. If you can’t make a donation at this point, you could help me reach my goal by sharing this page on Facebook or sending it to your friends and family!

I’ve been training hard the last few months – with the help of my running buddy pictured above (he’s actually not so helpful…) and your support means a lot as I take on this challenge.

And as excited as I am to attempt my first marathon, I'm even more thrilled to be part of this team. BOTSOGO is changing lives and I’m proud to be running 26.2 to support their work.

I’m grateful for your support and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on April 17 - race day!

Xoxo Helen
